Osstem Implant (CEO Hae-Sung Kim), the global leader in implant sales volume, announced that it signed a business agreement with Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic in Brazil at its Central Research Institute in Seoul where the headquarters is located on November 26.
Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic, located in Campinas, São Paulo state, Brazil, is a private medical educational institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine and dentistry. The signing ceremony on the 26th was attended by Osstem Implant Chairman Gyu-Ok Choi and Director General Jose Luiz Junqueira of the Mandic Educational Foundation. Other attendees included Dr. In-Ho Cho, Dr. Chung-Ju Hwang, and Dr. Kyung-Won Kim, Directors of Osstem Implant Dental Research Institute; Kyung-Rae Lee, Head of Overseas Sales Americas Division, Won-Ki Lee, Country Manager of Osstem Brazil, Julio D’Angeli, Strategic Director of São Leopoldo Mandic, Dr. Gabriela Victorelli, Innovation Business Manager and Patricia Bella Costa, Corporate Partnership Manager.
Under this agreement, Osstem Implant will provide comprehensive support to Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic, including clinical education curricula, learning materials, and hands-on training equipment. The partnership will also feature an exclusive ‘Osstem Implant Specialist Program’ at the university, aiming to cultivate dental specialists.
Director General Jose Luiz Junqueira of Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic said, “Osstem Implant, which has trained 120,000 dentists globally in clinical education since 2000, commands high trust in Brazil’s dental community due to its robust educational curriculum and exceptional speakers that rival university programs.” He added, “It was a meaningful opportunity to discuss various aspects of future development between our organizations, as we could directly observe Osstem’s cutting-edge research facilities, educational broadcasting facilities, and exhibition hall showcasing over 10,000 products including implants, orthodontic devices, and medical equipment.” According to an Osstem Implant representative, the Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic delegation also visited the company’s production headquarters in Busan prior to their Seoul visit, where they closely examined the automated implant manufacturing system.
Won-Ki Lee, Country Manager of Osstem Brazil, said, “Starting with Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic, we plan to jointly develop and operate implant clinical education programs in collaboration with Brazil’s leading public universities – the University of São Paulo (USP) and São Paulo State University (UNESP). We also plan to actively introduce our dental imaging equipment to major university hospitals.”
Osstem Implant is also actively participating in and hosting local dental academic conferences. Since 2022, the company has been operating product promotion and consultation booths at the São Paulo International Dental Congress (CIOSP), the largest dental event in Brazil organized by the São Paulo Association of Dental Surgeons (APCD). Additionally, the company holds an annual academic symposium called ‘Osstem Meeting’ in São Paulo, where its subsidiary is located, inviting dentists from across Brazil.
Osstem Implant acquired Implacil De Bortoli, Brazil’s third-largest implant company by market share, in May. Similarly, Swiss dental company Straumann Group acquired Brazilian dental implant company Neodent in 2015, while U.S. dental company Henry Schein acquired stakes in Brazilian dental supplies and equipment distributor Dental Cremer in 2016 and Brazil’s second-largest implant company S.I.N in 2023. Major global dental companies are targeting the Brazilian market due to its unlimited market growth potential.
In a 2022 report, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute cited JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) data identifying Brazil as the largest medical device market in Latin America. The report analyzed several growth factors in Brazil’s medical device market, including △ population growth and increased life expectancy, △ rising healthcare spending due to middle-class expansion, △growth in the medical insurance market and △shortage of medical devices.
According to WHO data from 2018, Brazil had approximately 134,000 dentists, 5.1 times more than Korea, ranking third globally among 127 countries with officially recognized dentists, after India and the United States. However, according to the latest data from the Brazilian Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO), the number of dentists in Brazil will reach 424,294 in 2024. The institution noted that 412 educational institutions offering dental degrees were operating in the country as of 2019. Osstem Implant predicts that the Brazilian dental implant market will grow from approximately 500 billion won in 2023 to 980 billion won by 2030, with an annual average growth rate of 10%.
The Brazilian subsidiary explained that Brazil is considered an optimal ‘business stage’ for Osstem Implant as a ‘total provider’ developing and selling all dental products, as the market continues to grow not only for missing teeth treatment but also for cosmetic implant procedures, clear aligners, teeth whitening, and oral care products.
Meanwhile, at ‘IDS’, the world’s largest dental equipment exhibition to be held in Germany next March, Osstem Implant will also co-operate a promotional booth for ‘Implacil’, its subsidiary brand. ■
